Bishop has hit the nail on the head with a rich seam of history to draw from. : This is an impressive historical thriller set at the height of Medici power in Florence. With a nod to Patrick Süskind's 'Perfume' and the swashbuckling actioners like 'The Count of Monte Cristo'. It's gritty, at times bloody but overall an engaging and enjoyable read. Not knowing what to expect with this book I was pleased fairly early on to come across someone from the period that I knew existed - immediately I got a handle on the events.
